EVEREST NORTH BASE CAMP

Everest Base Camp is either one of two base camps on opposite sides of Mount Everest. The Southern Base Camp in Nepal tends to be the most popular for the majority of Base Camp trips and is used by climbers choosing to summit Everest via the North East ridge. This was the route chosen by Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing on the first successful expedition which saw the mountain conquered on Friday, 29 May 1953. News of their success was published a few days later and in time to mark the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in London, Great Britain on the 2^nd June 1953. A prominent rock pitch marks the final obstacle before the summit is reached and was named after the mountaineer as ‘The Hillary Step’
