Cadair Idris is a mountain at a height of 893m, which lies at the southern end of the Snowdonia national park near the town of Dolgellau. The peak is one of the most popular in Wales for walkers and hikers. The name Cadair Idris means in English ‘Idris’s Chair’ and the name Idris in Welsh is often taken to be the name of a giant. The Cadair Idris massif is a brilliant example some remarkable glacial landscape sculptured in the last Ice Age. The summit is known as Pen y Gadair and the assent of this majestic of mountains treats the walker to some beautiful and picturesque views of Cwm Cau, which is a stunning amphitheater of huge cliffs encircling the beautiful waters of Llyn Cau.
